Before buying any type of software you should always check your hardware is able to run the software product without any problems. If your system requirements are not up to scratch, you could run into installation problems and unresponsive software.

Compatible Operating System

First things first, make sure your operating system matches that of the Autodesk software you are installing. If you’re installing the latest Autodesk 2018 products, it’s recommended that you have at least Microsoft Windows 7 SP1 (32-bit and 64 bit) installed. The software should also work smoothly on Microsoft Windows 8.1 and 10.

If you’re unsure as to what operating system your Windows computer is running, go to Start > About your PC (System Settings) > Edition, which will highlight what operating system you are running. This option will also show your current Processor, System type and installed RAM size.

Have you got enough disk space?

Installing software products can often take up a large amount of disk space on your hard drive, and if there isn’t enough space available, this can often lead to lag issues whilst using the software.

Autodesk products are well known for having large installations. You can find the full system requirements listed on the Autodesk website, which includes all of the top products, suites and cloud services. As an example, if you’re looking to install AutoCAD 2018, you will need at least 4GB of disk space for installation, a minimum of 8GB RAM and an additional 6GB of free hard disk space available for additional requirements such as point cloud data, 3D modelling and large datasets.

To check how much disk space you have left on your Windows computer go to your desktop and select “This PC”. This will show the amount of space you have left on your hard drive under OS (C:) and any external devices you have connected to your PC.

If you don’t have enough disk space to download your Autodesk product, there are a number of ways you can free up space. The first place you should start is by uninstalling applications which you don’t or hardly ever use. You can also clean up temporary files and run Disk Cleanup. A useful tutorial on how to clean up disk space are listed in this “7 Ways To Free Up Hard Disk Space on Windows” article.

Is your graphics card up to the job?

Having a compatible graphics card could improve software performance to a certain degree. For example a more advanced graphics card, such as a NVIDIA Quadro 2000, could improve features such as rendering, texture compression and high quality geometry. You may also find opening of software to be a lot faster with an improved graphics card.

Some of our graphics card recommendations for Autodesk software include:

  • NVIDIA Quadro 2000
  • NVIDIA Quadro 6000
  • Radeon Pro WX7100
  • AMD FirePro W2100 (FireGL V)

If you’re unsure as to what graphics card to purchase, using the Autodesk recommended graphics hardware table is a good place to start off with. This webpage shows all the certified and recommended graphics cards that work with your Autodesk software of choice.

Recommended hardware for Autodesk software

If you’re still running into issues when installing and running your software, there are a wide range of recommended and certified hardware, graphics cards and drivers to choose from.

A full list of hardware recommendations can be found on the Autodesk website, and can be filtered down to your requirements, including what products you wish to install, the product release version, system manufacturer and operating system.

Some of our hardware recommendations for Autodesk software include:

  • HP Z440 Workstation
  • HP Z840 Workstation
  • Dell Precision 5520 – NVIDIA Quadro M1200
  • HP Z240 Tower Workstation

After taking all these precautions, you should now fully know whether your hardware is able to run Autodesk software. If you are still unsure or are thinking of buying new compatible hardware please fill in a contact form or call us on 01403 784139.
