Case Study: Scan-to-BIM

Project: Edinburgh Tram improvement scheme

The Edinburgh Trams to Newhaven Project is a £165m scheme and a continuation of the existing Edinburgh Tramway Network, which runs from Edinburgh Airport to York Place. The continuation runs from York Place, down Leith Walk and then into Newhaven via Ocean Terminal.

The current project construction is 4.6km with 60% shared on-street running which Sacyr Farrans Neopul (SFN) are delivering in conjunction with the project delivery team and associated contractor.

We were initially engaged to work with one of the project participants on street lighting, creating 3D BIM models for coordination with the traffic signals and systems teams.

We were then further engaged to work on part of the civils aspect of the project, modelling the tram alignment and the surrounding roads, footways and cyclepaths, creating a BIM model with asset information (Uniclass, Asset & COBie) for different pavement makeups.

The final model was incorporated into the end client’s federated BIM model.

More information on the project can be found at the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) website at https://www.ice.org.uk/eventarchive/edinburgh-trams-extension-to-newhaven-online
